<br>I'm a bit late to watching this one, but I'm glad I got to it. I'm a huge Premier League fan and I've followed the stories of certain teams for years. However, this was an incredible inside take into what it takes to manage, build, and play for the Man City team.

What We're Watching in February 

Most people are aware that they'll need to prepare for an audition but are not really sure what this means. I've seen thousands of auditions, hosted hundreds of casting calls and have spoken to - who knows how many - on-camera talent from all walks of life. Here are a few mistakes I see happen often that are easily avoidable.

<b>1.Know what you're auditioning for.</b>
<br>I know this may sound a bit silly - but hear me out. You'd be suprised how often casting directors come across auditions in which the talent doesn't know what show they're auditioning for. This can be for a handful of reasons - such as talent getting auditions mixed up (because their audition calendar is full and unorganized) or they're simply not prepared. In sum, preparation is key to nailing your audition. How do you prepare? Here are some pointers:
<ul class="indent-list">1. Be on time.
<br>2. Practice your lines (if it's a scripted audition).
<br>3. Dress for the part.
<br>4. Research the production company and know what they generally cast for.
5. Remember to smile when your audition starts.
</ul>

<b>2. Be descriptive with you responses.</b>
<br>If you're auditioning for an unscripted show - such as a gameshow, talkshow or dating show - you'll be asked a ton of fun personality questions during your interview. The casting director will most likely ask you to answer all of your responses in complete sentences. For instance, if they ask you what your favorite color is, you should respond with "my favorite color is...". Because their voice will most likely be cut out of the interview, answering the question in full sentences will give the person who watches the video, context.

<b>3. Be in a quiet space. </b>
<br>The talent that does video auditions in quiet spaces are unsung heros. This is your big interview, so treat it like one! Here are some tips:
<ul class="indent-list">1. Quiet spaces are <b>not</b> cars or communal offices. 
<br>2. Put your dogs in a separate room, and turn your phone on DNB.
<br>3. If you won't be in a quiet space during the time of your interview, ask the poster if you can reschedule. They'll appreciate that you were proactive!
</ul>
<br>
<b>4. Look like your photos.</b>
<br>On your Casting Depot profile, we make it easy to upload you media to your profile. Head to your <b>Settings</b>, and click <b>Edit Profile</b>. 

If you've had a recent hair change, added some cool tattoos or got lasik eye surgery, it's most likely time to update your profile photos. We recommend renewing your photos at least once a year. Need a photographer? Head to your groups and ask the Casting Depot community for a recommendation.

What We're Watching in January

The best part about October are the Halloween movies, *without a doubt*. These halloween classics are the ones we grew up with that we rewatch every year. I'm not one for scary movies, but to get into the *spooky october mood* I like to cuddle up with a bowl of candy. Here's our definitive list of movies we love during this time of year:

10 Best Classic Halloween Movies For October

A common question working actors ask is "when is it time to join SAG/AFTRA?". While there's not one right answer, we aggregated our research to help you jump to make that decision.

	<li>**1. SAG/AFTRA is a professional stamp.**
		
SAG/AFTRA calls themselves the most distinguished entertainment and media union in the world. They represent approximately 160,000 actors, dancers, DJs, program hosts, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists among other professionals. 

Joining the union allows members to benefit from union negotiated benefits and salary. 

		**2. There's a cost associated with it.**
		
Joining SAG/AFTRA comes with a joining fee of $3,000 every 3 years. Members must also pay an annual base fee of $201.96 and an additional 1.575 percent of covered earnings up to $500,000. Fees may be lower if you decide to work in a branch area other than Hollywood. 

By joining SAF/AFTRA you narrow the amount of work available to you but it promises better benefits and pay(including residuals). The quality of work you can do with SAG/AFTRA is also much higher than work you might be able to find outside the union. 

SAG/AFTRA is there for you as a performer. They constantly negotiate for better contracts, establish a pension, and in some cases there is a possibility of health insurance. 

			**3. There are random perks.**
		
They also offer some free development resources to members. This includes conversation screenings, Q&A with filmmakers, actors, casting directors, and acting workshops. In addition, members get access to online classes where they can learn to edit their own reel or photoshop headshots. 

If you’re into voice acting, you can take advantage of the Don LaFontaine Voiceover Lab. Here you can take free voiceover and technical classes, as well as have access to booth time and practice sessions. 

There are also benefits like deals and discounts on gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and legal services to name a few, mixers and events, and screeners.

			**4. It can limit you.**
A downside to joining SAF/AFTRA is you won't be allowed to take opportunities in film and TV that are not under the union’s jurisdiction. Not joining a union can give you greater freedom in choosing the roles you really want.

The decision to join SAG/AFTRA or opting to join a union is up to you. It depends on how committed you are to working in the industry. 

Are you confident your talent will allow you to book enough work to make the investment of joining worthwhile? If you’re not looking for full-time work as an actor, the fee that comes with joining a union may not be worth it to you. However, if you’re looking for the best paying and highest quality work, joining SAG/AFTRA may be the best choice for you.


SAG/AFTRA vs. Non-Union, explained

The end of the world appears inevitable. At least that’s what we’ve been told nearly a thousand times by the movies. With climate change looming, nuclear weapons being produced, and living through a pandemic, the end of the world seems more realistic every day. 

Every depiction of humanity’s ultimate downfall serves a different purpose, whether it’s scaring us about aliens’ attempt to wipe out the human population (Independence Day) or warning us to not test on animals (Planet of the Apes). These films depict a cautionary tale to its viewers, often scaring us into scenarios that seem viable in our everyday lives. 

Here, we’ve compiled a list of the best apocalypse movies that are so real that they scare the hell out of us, all while taking a shot to analyze what the point is. 

Don’t worry, these films all have high entertainment value, whether it’s fiery explosions, natural disasters, rampant zombie attacks, or aliens blowing up cities. 


**I am Mother (2019)**

*How the World Ends:* That would be a huge spoiler, so let’s say humans are nearly extinct and robots are in charge.

*What’s the point?* The relationship and tensions between human life and artificial intelligence, and what human life really means. Also, the importance in a child’s upbringing and psychological development. 


**Shaun of the Dead (2008)**

*What’s the point?* Aside from reviving the zombie movie genre with lively humor, our best guess is that with a solid pack of family and friends, the zombies can be defeated as long as you take shelter in your favorite bar. 


**World War Z (2013)**

*How the world ends:* A massive, highly contagious zombie plague forces the world to reinvent and changes global politics as we know it. 

*What’s the point?* Think of our current global pandemic. The world should be all in together to fight the common enemy, right? Same with the zombie apocalypse: The world (United Nations in this case) must come together. 

**Cloud Atlas (2012)

*How the world ends:* We don’t know the specifics on how the apocalypse started, but we do know that it is the year 2321, and humans now speak a pidgin form of English. 

*What’s the point?* Adapted from David Mitchell’s epic novel, the same person is reincarnated six times over six different lives. It presents how the actions of one’s life carries over into the next life. It stars Tom Hanks as a kind hunter-gatherer and Hugh Grant as a cannibal, creating a fun and action-packed epic. 

**Planet of the Apes (1968)**

*How the world ends:* You may have seen the reboot prequel trilogy (2011-2017) which identifies how the Planet of the Apes universe got to where it is in the original 1968 classic. Perhaps the best part of the original is the final twist (SPOILER AHEAD). For the entire movie, all we know is that astronauts landed on a strange planet ruled by apes. In the final scene, Taylor (Charles Huston) discovers the ruins of the Statue of Liberty, revealing that they have been on Planet Earth the entire time - and that humanity wiped itself out with nuclear warfare, giving the apes a go at world dominance.

*What’s the point?* At the time of the film’s release, it hit a point that seemed reasonable during the Cold War era: the nuclear apocalypse. This lesson is still relevant today. We could destroy our planet if we don’t get along and another intelligent species, such as apes, would gladly take our place. 

**I am Legend (2007)**

*How the world ends:* Scientists genetically engineer a measles virus hoping to find the cure for cancer. Instead, they get a highly deadly and contagious virus that wipes out most of Earth’s population. This creates a mutant type of nocturnal humans called “Nightseekers”.

*What’s the point?* While pursuing a cure to save humanity, we need to be incredibly cautious towards how we approach experimental treatments. Nature is unpredictable and messing with it can often lead to dire consequences. 

**Terminator Franchise (1984, 1991, 2003, 2009, 2015)**

*What’s the point?* In short, to make us terrified of robots. Also, to show how much one individual and her son can create a formidable mother-son duo to impact the future of the world. 

**Snowpiercer (2013)

*How the world ends:* A chemical is released into the atmosphere to combat global warming. When it backfires, it freezes the planet and eventually leads to a world of humanity living on a train that annually circles the globe. 

*What’s the point?* This is a harsh allegory on the class system and the large gap between the poor and the wealthy, where bureaucrats and scientists ignore the problems of the poor and dying. 

**Interstellar (2014)**

*What’s the point?* The end of the world leads to all the fun SciFi stuff: wormholes, time travel, and colonizing other planets. All the while, we get to learn the importance of love. 

**Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)**

*How the world ends:* An alien life form plants pods on Earth that absorb each person’s attributes while they sleep. As each pod reaches full development, it assimilates the physical characteristics, memories, and personalities and creates duplicates that are devoid of all human emotion. 

*What’s the point?* Don’t let an outside force come in and turn you into a conforming “pod person” (Stick it to The Man!) -- fight with all your might to stay true to yourself. 

**This is the End (2013) **

*How the world ends:* Earthquakes, fires, explosions, devilish beasts from Hell; all the warnings we ignored in the Bible. Meanwhile, the good guys get beamed up to Heaven to live in harmony. 

*What’s the point?* This all goes down during a celebrity rager at James Franco’s house. So, for starters, we can say don’t go to one of Franco’s Hollywood parties. It also offers a humorous glimpse at how celebrities, comedians in this case, would handle such a scenario -- turning on each other, arguing over who can eat Franco’s Milky Way, and finishing all the drugs from the party. 

**Zombieland (2009)**

*How the world ends:* Mad cow disease mutates into a human zombie virus and wipes out the majority of the population rather quickly. 

*What’s the point?* To show that by laying low, calculating strategy, and not being a hero can get you pretty far during the zombie apocalypse. But, when our main character Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) decides to rise to the occasion, it has a little more appeal and satisfaction. 

**12 Monkeys (1995)**

*How the world ends:* A deadly virus that has wiped out most of mankind has forced humanity to live underground. *What’s the point?* Travelling back in time to stop a cataclysm can be much harder than you think, especially when your facts about the order of events are unsure. 

**28 Days Later (2003) **

*How the world ends:* Animals rights activists (starting to become a trend, no?) raid a lab to free a bunch of chimpanzees, unaware that they are infected by a virus called “rage” which then infects the activists and most of Great Britain. The infected become rampant zombies that soon terrorize everyone. 

*What’s the point?* To reveal that zombies aren’t the only creatures filled with evil plans and ideas, such as the military’s “solution”, which involves using women as sex slaves. Seems that when the zombies hit and chaos strikes, morality and ethics are put on hold. 

**The Matrix Trilogy (1999, 2003)**

To solve their lack of solar power, they enslave the surviving humans into a virtual reality, and use them as their new power source.

*What’s the point?* Let’s say to creep us out over the inevitable future; our reliance on technology, the dangers of virtual reality, and our perception of what’s real.


15 Best Apocalypse Movies That Should Frighten Us

The Bachelor has been America’s guilty pleasure for close to two decades. It’s not the first dating show to hit TV, as others like “The Dating Game” and “The Newlywed Game” have existed way before it. Yet none of them have had the modern impact that the Bachelor has. 

*However, things may be changing.* 

The UK’s “Love Island” has been airing since 2015 and recently found its way into Americas' households (produced by CBS premiereing in 2019). 

More recently, Netflix released their versions of modern dating including “Love is Blind” and “Too Hot To Handle” - which were overnight hits. “Love is Blind” amassed more than 30 million households views in its first two months. 

Both shows put their own twist on dating. “Love is Blind” featured singles who try to find a perfect match without ever seeing each other face-to-face, forcing couples to connect emotionally first.

“Too Hot to Handle” placed hot singles in paradise for a chance at love and a $100,000 prize – given that participants must refrain from engaging in sexual activity.

Inspired by dating apps like Tinder, these two shows have forced users to prioritize initial physical attraction over personality. 

This is where The Bachelor falls short. While the show may have been more relatable in a tinder-less world 15 years ago, dating simply doesn't look like this anymore. So... do we encourage The Bachelor to continue to produce more seasons because it's a mental escape OR do we encourage the producers to integrate a more realistic storyline? (Sorry, Bachelor fans!)

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Non-fiction originals says “We’ve been able to carve out a realistic and reflective way of how society is.” 

A reality tv classic, The Bachelor has spawned 15 seasons including “The Bachelorette” and 6 seasons “Bachelor in Paradise.” Even those who don’t watch it, know about it. Rob Mills, a top ABC executive, says  Bachelor fans have always been loyal to the show and will continue to be. 

It seems The Bachelor will never go out of style. Perhaps what we'll see a pivot in their storyline given the new landscape of dating shows? TBD. Looking forward to next season.

I interned as an unscripted casting intern and here are some valuable things I have learned:

<b> Time Management </b>

Time management is a valuable skill that can be transferred to any job. Interning caused me to reevaluate how I spend my time. Between school, interning, and a daily commute time of five hours, it was essential to use my time in an effective manner - like doing my homework while I commuted. Limiting my time on the phone also proved to be truly helpful. 

By making sure everything was balanced, I was able to put all my effort into my internship while I was there. In the actual office, time management was key. While working, there would be various tasks that all needed to be done at once. Prioritizing tasks as they came to me helped me navigate my day efficiently. 

<b> New Casting and Development Skills </b>

Internships are created to teach and prepare students for their career. And for me, it did as such. For instance, as an unscripted casting intern I learned editing on Adobe Premiere, which is a tangible skill that I continued to practice. I learned how to research talent, current trends, and events for television development and for casting leads. I developed my writing abilities by learning how to write pitches and organize decks. 

<b> Industry Experience </b>

Although I study film and television, we never focused on unscripted television (despite my interest in the field). While working as an intern at Casting Depot, I was able to experience the industry firsthand. Through my internship, I learned what casting processes were like, which software was used to record skype calls or edit casting videos, and how shows were pitched. In school, we never learned the specifics of the industry. Interning gave me the knowledge to prepare me for my post graduation career.


What I’ve Learned from Being an Unscripted Casting Intern

Quarantine has become a way of life. How are we adapting? With all of this time being cooped up indoors, people have been offering ideas and suggestions on how to occupy time; pick up a hobby, learn another language, paint, *and our favorite and most popular*, watch a little TV. 

Sometimes a throwback to the simpler times feels good. All of your favorite current shows are on hold from production, and all the shows from the 2000’s and 2010’s have been binged too many times that you can recite each line. 

Think of the old days (not so old though). Back then, you had to wait an entire week for the next episode of your favorite show to come on. Not only that, you had to wait months for the next season to come out. 

And yes, even the streaming service shows typically have a year long waiting period between each season. However, now with everything available at your disposal with a click of a button, it's easier to binge. If there was ever a period in television to quarantine, it'd be now. 

Living in the streaming world has made this quarantine just a little bit easier. That’s why we have compiled a list of throwbacks from the prior decades to save you that valuable time. Not to worry, each of the shows boast plenty of seasons (and plenty of episodes) to sit back, relax, and keep those sweatpants on for the time being. And with everyone’s attention span getting smaller day by day, we’ve narrowed down the list to our favorite classic sitcoms.

<b> Seinfeld - The Good News, Bad News  </b>

“The show about nothing”. No, that’s actually what people refer to as Seinfeld. All you need to do is see a few episodes and you’ll see what people mean. You’ll also see why it was the highest rated sitcom for so long, and if you’re a fan of those modern popular shows like “The Office” or “Always Sunny”, it’s clear how Seinfeld paved the way for absurd characters in absurd situations. The best part about it? There’s no real storyline to follow, because it is actually about NOTHING. The series follows four friends that hang out and experience everyday life in New York City. So, this makes it a quarantine favorite, as you can play the show on loop while you leave the room, cook a meal, do some chores, come back and you really haven’t missed much. You can even hear a joke from the other room and still get a kick out of it.

<b> Friends - Pilot  </b>

What more can we say about Friends? Either you watch Friends with your friends or your friends watch Friends and won’t shut up about it. Another 90’s classic, this NBC sitcom lasted into the early 2000’s. Revolving around six friends in New York City (which makes the title all the more clever), this show created a significant cultural impact in America, from the hairstyle known as “the Rachel” to people greeting each other with, “How you doin’?”. An unscripted reunion show by HBO was scheduled for late-March, but suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. So now more than ever is your chance to catch up on it before all your real-life friends begin freaking out when it does eventually come on.

Ah, what’s better than hanging out with your friends in your favorite bar after a long day of work? Well, in a quarantine world where bars are a social pastime, the next best thing we get is the 80’s sitcom Cheers. Revolving around a bar in Boston, this series follows both workers and bar regulars through daily life inside the establishment. This show is definitely one to sit down and follow, but no worries if you miss an episode here or there. The characters and plot develop each season, with a new storyline taking over as the story arc. It was the start of many great careers, most notably Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. So, if you want to reminisce about bar life, look no further than these New Englanders from the 80’s, who seemingly tackle social issues that we thought millennials started the narrative on. A show certainly ahead of its time, this series lasted 11 whole seasons.

If we have Cheers on here, we most certainly need to put its spinoff series Frasier here as well. Centered around the Cheers character Dr. Frasier Crane, actor Kelsey Grammar portrayed the lovable psychiatrist for over two decades, and it’s no surprise he develops more over time. Frasier is a benchmark for what people call, “clever, intelligent humor”, starting in 1993 after the Cheers series finale. The show is unconventional to a degree, which is what makes it so unique. Just expect some sort of dramatic storylines similar to what you find in Cheers. If you’re wondering whether you need to commit to 11 seasons of Cheers before you commit to 11 seasons of Frasier, well, the choice is yours to make. Depends on how crazy quarantine is driving you.

The Best Quarantine Sitcom Throwbacks for Comfort

Scripted television and unscripted television are two completely different genres. If you’re just starting out in your career, it’s important that you fully understand the difference between the two. When scrolling through the Casting Depot casting calls, there will be a mix of both types of projects (unless you decide to filter otherwise). Some actors only apply to scripted calls while others apply to both unscripted and unscripted. It simply depends on what their career goals are.

	<li><b>1. Scripted television</b> is all content that’s produced with a script. Examples include television series, movies and commercials.</li>
	<li><b>2. Unscripted television</b> is all content that’s produced without a script. Examples include YouTube talk shows, documentary-series and game shows.

A common misconception is that unscripted television is only reality TV. Unscripted content is an umbrella term for all programming that does not require a formatted script. The term ‘unscripted’ was coined years ago when the launch of reality-based dramatic content became relevant in programming. Survivor was arguably one of the first successful reality-TV shows. Since then, this section of the industry has completely evolved into other areas of unscripted content including **game shows, talk shows, doc-series** and yes - still **reality tv shows**.
