Having a great monologue is essential for anyone looking to become a professional actor. Most actors have their "go-to" monologues that not only show off their skills but are versatile for a variety of settings.

A lot rides on having the "perfect" monologue. No pressure! So - how do you pick the right monologue? While there's not one right answer, there are many great options for choosing the perfect monologue... but today we’ll be focusing on what *isn’t* perfect. 

Here are a couple monologues elements to consider *staying away from*.

**1. The “I Remember When” Story**
A monologue centered around a real life story about your life isn’t dynamic enough. It’s not about sharing a story about a time you did something or how something made you feel. Casting Directors are looking for how you can turn a small piece of life into a much brighter moment. 
		
Two important elements that you should have in a monologue is both connection and conflict, which is something usually lacking from “I remember when” stories. Don’t tell us the story of a really bad date you went on, act out the date instead. 

**2. Trying To Be Something You’re Not**
If you are a 21 year-old college student, your go-to monologue shouldn't showcase you the role of a 50 year old retired firefighter. *Makes sense, right?* Even if you’re trying to showcase a range, it’s better to stick to something familiar that can be done well rather than something that hasn't been perfected. 

Focus on showcasing your strongest persona and what you do best. Finding your own persona may be hard but be honest with yourself about which personas you can play best. 

**3. A Novel **
It’s a monologue, not a novel. Every great monologue should follow an arc, but this doesn’t mean it should take 15 minutes to recite. The longer the monologue, the less likely your audience is to listen.

Shorter monologues that are well done is more memorable than a mediocre one that lasts 3 minutes. It’s not about doing as much as you can with your time but doing the best you can do with the time you have.

They are constantly discovering new movies that give them the same spark that I felt at their age (some of the same ones I watched when I was younger!) and want them to be able to continue to develop their love for the magic of Disney.

CTO Alan Seales Sets Out to Change How We Podcast

Jake Reiner is an actor, producer, writer, and podcast host. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and is the son of director/actor Rob Reiner & producer Michele Reiner. He is also the grandson of the late director/actor/comedian Carl Reiner. Before he became a full-time actor in 2018, Jake was a local television news reporter for the better part of seven years. He worked at stations in Salinas, CA, Houston, TX, and most recently at the CBS station in Los Angeles. Over his career, he’s acted in numerous films, stage plays, and has an extensive background in improv comedy.

Jake also hosts two baseball podcasts. Meeting on the Mound with Jake Reiner is a show about the appreciation of baseball, in which Jake interviews high-profile guests about their love for the game. Such guests include his father, grandfather, actor/comedian Billy Crystal, MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes, as well as former players and influential pioneers in the game today. Jake is a diehard Dodgers fan, so his other podcast, which he co-hosts with two other super-fans, is aptly titled The Incline: Dodgers. 

He has a younger brother, Nick, who is a writer, and younger sister, Romy, who is an actor/writer herself. Jake currently lives with his long-time girlfriend, Margaret Berkowitz, who is also an actor as well as a singer.

I’ve been featured in the films Flipped (Castle Rock Ent.), Being Charlie (Castle Rock Ent.), and Shock & Awe (Acacia Filmed Ent.), and was a guest star on 68 Whiskey (Paramount Network). I am also a writer and cast member of the award-winning sketch comedy series, Sunday Morning Digital, and a series regular on Beyond Hope, a web series comedy. Additionally, I’m a guest star on Girls Gone Mild LA, another sketch comedy web series.
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
I am set to star in the groundbreaking romantic comedy, Things Like This (Malibu, Bro. Prod.), and am currently writing and starring in hilarious new sketches for Sunday Morning Digital. I also just shot multiple sketches for Season 3 of Girls Gone Mild LA.
 
 
What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
My favorite shows right now are The Crown, The Last Kingdom, and Ted Lasso. During the pandemic, I became fascinated by the British monarchy, British historical fiction, and a clueless American who goes to Britain. The United States was just a weird place to be in 2020 — the UK felt like a different world to get lost in.
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
Two of my favorite shows of all time are Mad Men and Suits: both are obviously off the air now, but those are the types of shows I’d love to be on. I’m drawn to a good snarky dramedy. If I had to pick a show that’s still airing, I’d go with Ted Lasso — it fits my brand of humor and the cast seems like they have a great time.
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
My advice is to set up a profile on Actors Access and self-submit to as many projects as you can. There are some great non-union projects on there and it’s one way to build a reel. 

Also, I would suggest accepting nearly every audition you get. Even if you don’t think you’re right for the role or are uncomfortable with the part, the casting director may see your audition and think of another role they’re casting that you are right for. For example, I auditioned for the role of a guy working in the mail room at an army base in 68 Whiskey — I didn’t get that part, but they ended up casting me as a Captain who orders an airstrike. Much cooler part, in my humble opinion.
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Since we’re still living in a pandemic, all auditions are being done via self-tape. One of my reps told me to get your audition tape in as soon as you can. Don’t wait until the deadline in the breakdown because casting directors are looking at tapes as they come in. If you catch their eye, they may not have to look at the rest of the auditions and you’ll get the part!

New Gigs on Casting Depot This Week  - April 7

With a Bachelor of Arts in TV, Film and Media and a Master of Fine Arts in screenwriting, Jasmine C. Leyva has worked as an associate producer on a NAACP winning docuseries entitled Unsung, and shortly after, was given the opportunity to write and produce on Being, a docuseries highlighting dynamic entertainers in film and music. Aside from working on a court show, casting for Food Network shows and starring in national commercials, Leyva has taught screenwriting at the university level and has won multiple screenwriting awards.
 
Jasmine and Kenny Leyva produced their own feature length documentary, The Invisible Vegan, a film that chronicles Jasmine’s personal experience with plant-based eating. The film also explains how plant-based eating is directly linked to African roots and how African-American eating habits have been debased by a chain of oppression stemming from slavery, economics and modern agribusiness.
 
She is currently on VH1’s Behind The Music producing team while independently producing a documentary about disordered eating in communities of color. Not to sound pedestrian, but the sky is the limit and her evolution will be televised!

I am currently on VH1’s Behind the Music’s producing team, I just shot a commercial for VolksWagen, and I am working independently on a food documentary about eating disorders among people of color.
 
 
What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
I am actually watching “Mash” at the moment. It’s definitely not 2020, but I’m loving it. 
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
I would love to star in any HBO original show no matter the genre, from “I May Destroy You” to “Raised By Wolves.” They have a knack for creating cool characters and interesting universes. 
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
I would say focus on being an artist. Every industry professional will give you a different list of things you need to do to break into the industry and by the time you have finished reading their book list, watching their movie list, taking their suggested classes, sending their suggested emails, you don’t have a body of work and you’re not doing the one thing you set out to do. So I would say never lose sight of your actual dream. If you want to be an actor, make sure you're acting even if it’s on your instagram or a student film.
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
The industry can have a very cold spirit, a racist spirit, a work-you-to-the-bone spirit. Don’t let those negative spirits shape you in any way and don’t catch the ego flu. Approach your career with love and compassion. Hollywood already has too many a--holes.

VH1 Producer Jasmine Leyva Says "Artistry Over Industry"

Award-Winning Actor Kevin Interdonato has successfully navigated the industry as a working actor in a career of Independent Film and Television. You can see him on the Showtime series ‘City on a Hill’, Season 2, premiering March 28th. He sat down with us to discuss his career:

Tell us about your credits. What have you worked on?
 
It feels like I have worked on every budget Indie film you can think of under the sun, around the country and overseas. I’ve worked on films that have reinvigorated my love for acting, and others that broke my heart. I’ve gotten paid well, and I’ve gotten paid in pizza. I’ve had a good amount of festival pieces throughout my career so far, a ton of TV shows, and some commercials.
 
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
Yeah, we wrapped up City On a Hill, and I’ve been writing and preparing films of my own for production. I only write films I know I can execute, rather than spending time on writing just for the sake of it. For me, that’s not being productive with an end game, it’s just satisfying an immediate urge. It took me a while to learn the difference. If I’m going to put energy into any film I’d like to make, it will be executed. Right now, I have three films I’ve been cast in (one in Germany), and two of my own, in 2021.
 
 
What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
The Queen's Gambit on Netflix had me completely sucked in from the very first moment - to the last. Brilliant.
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
Well, I think I’d choose something that was a happy medium between longevity and creative fulfillment. Doing film for so many years, the steady pay interests me more now than before. I love being on City On A Hill. Being a regular on Blue Bloods or Law and Order: Organized Crime would definitely be something I’d jump over in a second.
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
When you stop believing in yourself, you lose. Be a seeker of knowledge in this industry, and of yourself, to improve your craft and opportunities. Do something on a consistent basis to be better than you were the day before. And find a mentor, someone that’s been where you want to be, ask questions and learn!
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Make efforts on behalf of yourself and your career, small weekly efforts, to accomplish. Give yourself small victories. The rejection you expose yourself to as an actor, can be crushing to anyone. Don’t fall victim. Stay the course, strive forward, and reward your small accomplishments on your journey. Because if you expect positive encouragement or a pat on the back from someone else in the industry, or booking a job as validation, you’ll be setting yourself up for disappointment. Give it to yourself. Fight to stay positive in the face of adversity.

Spotlight on Award-Winning Actor Kevin Interdonato

Ria Patel is an Australian Indian Actress, Dancer and Writer. She is well known for her lead role in Season Two of the first ever Gujarati Web-Series; Varta Re Varta, and her recent award winning shorts; Bandaid and Two Paper Nightingale which also choreographed and the film was also a finalist at the Student Academy Awards last year. As a creative she wants to connect with her audience, help them feel understood and ultimately evoke change. 

 
Tell us about your credits. What projects have you worked on?
 
I have worked on a Gujarati Web-Series Varta re Varta, the story follows an Gujarati Indian girl who is pursuing her acting career in LA and along the way she is exploring her sexuality. It is her journey of self acceptance. This story was so important to me as this can still be a topic that's brushed under the rug in this part of India (Gujarat). I have also worked on a lot of independent films: Bandaid which picked up a few awards at the festival. A short film: Nice, this was about a girl who loves fries and she is marrying a guy who follows Jainism (they don’t eat potatoes - they believe in non-violence therefore uprooting potatoes kills microorganisms), this story highlights the choice women have to make when they get married and sometimes have to give up their identity for their husband and his family.

What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
Currently working on a few projects. One is a story about estranged sisters and finding their way back to each other after the death of their parents. I am very excited about my web-series Fi and Me. The series portrays two best friends (one is Indian American and the other Indian Australian) who are navigating the ups and downs of adulthood. It explores the taboo topics within our South Asian society such as female pleasure and masturbation, colorism, and mental health.

Another project close to the heart is a film “Sifter”, it is about an Indian Lesbian couple celebrating their first Karva Chauth (a Hindu festival) together. I love this project because these two characters have already embraced their sexual orientation and are in a different stage in their life of trying to make their relationship work.
 
 
What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
This Is Us and Sorry For Your Loss (technically this released 2018 but I watched it this year so hopefully it still counts). I love stories about human relationships, where you can be a fly on the wall and just listen to them connect. 
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
This Is Us and The Sinner!! Another favorite genre of mine.
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
Training! You don’t have to have a degree but put yourself in an acting class, even after my acting degree I still do classes and workshops, as actors it is so important to work that muscle. It’s like going to the gym. And ask yourself your why and write it down and keep it close. It’s important throughout our career with all the ups and down we remind ourselves of our why, to help us keep going.
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Go into the audition room (nowadays zoom room) with the intention of giving to them (CDs, producer, directors), this is simply a mindset thing but very important, this changes the dynamic and no longer are you in the audition with a sense of desperation. 

Connect with Casting Directors and other industry people, reach out to them, via Clubhouse or DM them (sometimes CD workshops aren’t the best place to have a casual conversation) and ask questions about THEM! You want to create a relationship in a casual setting so it doesn’t feel forced. A lot of times actors have the mindset of “what can you give me give me give me”. When you talk to them, ask: “What are you excited about in your career or life”. A lot of CDs get so excited and surprised when I ask this. They are human too!

Outside of acting, I’m working on two screenplays and a novel. As Education Coordinator for Henderson Writers group, I’m preparing for this year’s Las Vegas Writer’s Conference, a virtual event for authors, poets, and screenwriters. And my main focus is hosting my new show, The 52 Love Podcast. Last year, I wrote a blog series called 52 Love: 52 Love Lessons in 52 Weeks. While working with my literary agent to transition it into a book, I’m expanding the platform by taking the series to the airwaves. Available in video and audio formats, the show explores each tip with a new guest from the entertainment industry each week.

What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
So far WandaVision, but I’m willing to bet Loki claims the top spot on my list this summer.
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
If we’re reaching for the heavens here, I’d star as the lead in Dark Beacon, a dramatic series based on my WIP. I’ve written it in book form, feature length film, and I’m working on the TV pilot, which makes more sense than a movie. But I didn’t know that until I wrote it.
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
1. Respect your art enough to study your craft. Lots of people say they want to do things like write, act, or direct, but they aren’t willing to put in the work to learn how to do it well. Success takes time and attention. 

2. Meet people with similar goals to you. You will be each other’s cheerleaders and champions when you need them. 

3. Support other artists, even if you think you have nothing to gain from it directly. Good will accumulates.

4. Most of all, remember that journey will hurt, and you will be rejected. But the time you spending honing your skills, building momentum, and developing your network will make all the difference to your achievements.

What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Be mindful of other people’s time. Minutes are precious.

Tell us about your casting credits. What projects have you worked on?
 
I’ve been in the industry for the last 10 years as a Producer, Line Producer and Production Manager. I’ve produced commercials for Under Armour with Lindsey Vonn, feature films like “Lady-Like” on Netflix, worked with Wiz Khalifa on his music video “Rolling Papers 2” and also produced international ads for Jins Eyewear. I’m extremely grateful that I’ve continued to be able to work throughout the years for some amazing clients.
 
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
I’m producing a Netflix docuseries at the moment, as well as producing a feature film about two intellectually challenged adults who fall in love in a small town in Texas and bond over their love of horses. After a year of uncertainty with COVID, I’m really excited to be back on set soon and see where these projects take me. 
 
 

What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
“Your Honor” was probably my favorite show that finished in February. Nothing else has really grasped my attention yet, but I am looking forward to a lot this year like “Bel Air,” “Dexter” and “The Underground Railroad.”

Netflix. My dark humor probably isn’t suited for the kiddies. 
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
When you think you’ve done everything you can, do more. You have way more fight in you than you realize. You truly have to believe in the mantra of “The greater the risk, the greater the reward.” If you don’t, then this business is not for you.

What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Focus on what you are doing because that’s the only path that matters.

Producer Lauren Peacock Shares Her Advice and Insider Tips for Success

Andy Juett is a casting director and actor from Washington, D.C. Recently the Executive Producer of Super Troopers 2, he's produced for major networks like Amazon, TruTV, and more. He's also been featured in dozens of commercials and even the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. Cool, right? Andy sat down with us to give us insider tips into the world of casting:
 
 
Tell us about your casting credits. What projects have you worked on?
 
Casting, to me, is almost the most important part of producing anything on film that involves telling a story. I have cast everything from TV series, to pilots, to commercials. The key is to put the right people in the right seats on the bus.
 
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
My big current project is a TV pilot called OFFLINE where I cast Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Hateful Eight), Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske (3 of the 5 Super Troopers/Broken Lizard comedy troupe) and French actor Mathilde Ollivier (Overlord, Boss Level.) OFFLINE is a dark sci-fi comedy adventure that has each of the big names in the correct character slots, but it also is rounded it with great Denver, CO talent that we booked in a few roles near where the pilot was shot.

What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
It’s still early in 2021, so the jury’s still out there, but great shows that were also well cast this past year are comedies like Dave on FX/Hulu, Ted Lasso on Apple+
and mindbenders like Devs on FX/Hulu.
 
 
This or that 👉 Netflix or Disney+?
 
Netflix has more of a breadth of what I’m interested in, but Disney+ did deliver hard with The Mandalorian, Wandavision and the Ewok movies are even coming on soon!
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
1. Try to do a lot of things. If you’re afraid of multi-tasking or learning disciplines you might not otherwise gravitate towards in entertainment and production, it’s going to be a tough road for you. Always understand that all parts of the production are important and if you understand what makes each discipline important, you’ll be able to operate from a much more effective spot when casting and producing

2. Have empathy. If you’re casting something and you think someone “looks” the part, you’re doing a very broad stroke that isn’t getting in to the nitty gritty of what that actor is capable of. If you have the means, figure out what makes actors tick (their training, do they do comedy, do they perform dance, do they have something about their upbringing that changes their qualification level etc.) If you can think about what an actor is capable of in a role by putting yourself in their shoes, your productions will be more successful.

3. More than any other genre, comedy is about casting. Think about how much less funny The Hangover would be without the exact actors in those roles at that exact moment in time. If you’ve got a good script, hire the RIGHT comedic talents and let them loose. They’re dying to give you gold. Let them.

4. You don’t need to know how to do everything, but you should build your rolodex of people who are better than you that do.

What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Make your own stuff until people hire you to make their stuff. Sharpen the saw by doing. Don’t wait. Just do it and one thing leads to another. No “things” lead to nothing. Do something and learn.

Casting Director Andy Juett Gives Insider Tips

An actor from Montclair, New Jersey, Anna Gustavsen is currently studying performing arts and filmmaking at Savannah College of Art and Design. Anna started acting at age fifteen after convincing her parents to let her create a Backstage profile, and she’s spent the last three years soaking up experience on film sets. Anna’s love for acting was born while watching Carrie Fisher's performance in Star Wars: A New Hope for the first time, and she still listens to Princess Leia's theme whenever she is preparing for a role. 

 
Tell us about your casting credits. What projects have you worked on?
 
The first film I worked on was a student film called Brownie Points, directed by Adrienne Civetti. I was fifteen and it was the first project I had ever auditioned for, so the whole process of driving to and from Baltimore with my amazingly supportive parents for production was really exciting for me. Seeing everything that goes into making a film for the first time definitely solidified the idea that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry. After that I did Eunbi Kwak’s A Day in the Coffee Shop, and I took a few background roles here and there just for the purpose of being on a set. You always meet interesting people that way, which is one of the things I love the most about acting. In 2019, Adrienne Civetti reached out to me again about coming back to Baltimore for her senior thesis film, Subject 17, with co-director and writer Brooks Gray. I immediately said yes– I love working with them, the environment they create on set is always so fun and supportive. Subject 17 ended up going to South Texas Underground Film Festival in early 2020, which was very cool and affirming.
 
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
I wrapped a short horror film a little over a month ago called The Judas-Abel Medical Center, directed by Jo-el Gordon. I had never worked in that genre before and I had such a great time. I play the role of Kira, who I was super intrigued by, because her circumstances have rendered her physically voiceless. So, for the whole film I’m emoting entirely through facial expression and movement, which was definitely made easier by the physicality of some scenes between me and my talented scene partners. The hardest parts were not being able to scream and getting through the one day we didn’t have coffee on set. It’s in post right now, and I’m excited to see where it goes. Other than that, I’m currently packing to move on-campus at SCAD, where I have plans to write and direct a short film. I’m excited to get behind the camera and collaborate with other people again.

What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
I really loved Wandavision. The direction Marvel is taking their content in is so new and interesting, and it was fun to share that viewing experience with people all over the world who were tuning in every week. I’ve also been watching a ton of Criminal Minds, which has definitely gotten me through the past year at home. I actually got to chat briefly with Matthew Gray Gubler a few weeks ago, who plays Spencer on the show. The episodes he’s directed are so terrifyingly creepy, I’d love to work with him one day.
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
I mentioned Wandavision, but it would be mind-blowing to work on literally any Marvel project. I think every actor shares that goal– if not Marvel, entering into any franchise that universally loved would be such a magical experience. Another show like that for me would be Doctor Who. I haven’t kept up with the later seasons as much, but David Tennant shaped my childhood. Realistically, my dream show to work on would be any show I’m lucky enough to get cast in. The shooting schedules for those kinds of projects seem insane but I would be so thrilled to do anything of that scale.
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
Have fun with it! If there’s any time to not take yourself too seriously, it’s when you first start. There’s a certain beauty about being able to take roles in little projects that very few people will see. This is your time to fall in love with what you do and make art without the threat of a bad review hanging over your head. It’s inevitable that we’ll all look back at the early phases of our careers and cringe, but everything I’m doing right now will always hold a special place in my heart.
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
I think making the mental distinction between goals you can achieve on your own and goals you can’t is a really healthy thing to do for yourself as an actor. It’s helped me figure out what my personal relationship with success is, because that definition is so different for everybody. For example, deciding you’re going to submit yourself for a certain number of roles by the end of the week is a goal you have total control over, as opposed to saying you want to get nominated for an Oscar by the time you’re thirty. Those goals are fun to set for yourself too, but it’s easy to get discouraged when you aren’t frequently checking things off your list. Making that distinction helps me feel more in control of my traction, especially in an industry like this one. I’m only eighteen, so I’m just taking it day by day.

Glorianne "Glo" Cody is a Brooklyn based Voice Actor and Owner/Executive Producer of Robo-c Raptor, a full-service production company. Glo has voiced and produced commercial content for some of the world’s largest brands. She is a member of SAG-AFTRA and represented by Atlas Talent Agency and Benz Talent. She is one of six members of an all-female indie improv group called HEMLOCK, and performs stand up comedy in a non-pandemic world.

Tell us about your credits. What have you worked on?
 
I’ve worked on mostly commercial & branded content, as both a producer and voice actor. Between TV commercials, social media ads, photoshoots and the occasional music video, I’ve worked with some of the worlds largest brands, including Motorola, Lenovo, CVS, Chapstick, IBM, Comcast, Culturelle, LG Mobile, Ford, and Morgan Stanley, to name a few.

What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
I’m producing a “Masterclass” like series for a major ﬁnancial brand. In my other job, I’m submitting lots of really fun auditions. I just upgraded my home studio booth and I’m really excited about it!

WandaVision! And I don’t even care about the Marvel Universe!
 
 
If you could work/be on any show, what show would that be?
 
As a producer, I’d love to produce a beautiful piece like the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
As a voice actor I would LOVE to work on the animated series Archer. That would be a dream gig!
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
As a producer, networking is absolutely key. Connect with people online and ask them to share their stories. Take on an entry level (PA) or intern position at a production company, agency, or TV show and learn what different types of produc-on roles are out there. There’s so much to learn, but you can only take one bite at a time.

As a voice actor, educate yourself on the type of work that’s out there and where you might fit in. Be aware of the costs and expectation of a voice actor, and should you decide to enter into the field be patient, keep at it, and never stop taking classes. Get lots of coaching in the area you want to work in before you ever cut a demo or start auditioning for work.
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Be patient with yourself. No one knows where the industry (or the world) is headed, but it’s definitely changing. That’s not a bad thing! Be flexible enough to roll with the punches and keep in touch with the latest trends and technologies. The world will keep on turning and you need to be ready when it does.

Also, always have a production or voiceover reel handy to share with a potential client. Keep it updated, you never know when people are looking at it. If you don’t have one, make sure you keep a copy of everything you’ve worked on so you can make one.

Glo Cody on Producing & Acting - How To Do Both

Roy Orecchio (he/him) is a career long unscripted producer working on some of the boldest and most memorable reality series in recent memory. For the last 10+ years, Roy has served as the Executive Producer and Showrunner on series for MTV, Bravo. Logo, E!, Fuse, and Netflix. His sharp storytelling abilities, capacity to create premium content, and strong post production skills, make him an all around “soup to nuts” producer…a quality hard to come by in an era of producer fragmentation and specialization. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Roy grew up with the glitz of the Las Vegas Strip in his backyard. Living in Las Vegas gave him a unique perspective on the value of big personalities and showmanship. Roy attended The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University before relocating to Los Angeles after graduation. Roy lives with his life partner Tim in Los Angeles, and when he’s not filming on location or working in an edit bay, he loves to snowboard all over the country and the world.

Tell us about your casting credits. What projects have you worked on?
 
I began working my way up the industry ladder in Burbank, starting as an assistant in the production department at The Disney Channel. Leaving Disney, I was lucky enough to become a producer on Battlebots for Comedy Central. The show was a huge cultural phenomenon at the time, we even had an Energizer Bunny parody commercial. Short of an Emmy, that’s about as good as it gets, haha! After BattleBots, I went on to become the Supervising Producer on MTV’s afternoon block of dating shows: Dismissed, Date My Mom, and Next. Again, those were all just tremendous cultural touch points for a certain generation of people who grew up watching MTV. Those dating series still come up in meetings, even today. People have such good memories of coming home from school and watching or catching a weekend marathon. 
 
I really feel like we taught an entire group of people what to do (and not do) on a date. I’m especially proud of the casting I orchestrated on those shows, featuring LGBTQ+ daters and treating them as equally as our hetrosexual daters. It was around 2003-2006 at the time, and there were still certain cultural barriers in place that, in a small way, I helped break. MTV was really my producing home for many years and that eventually led to supervising Jersey Shore. Talk about a cultural phenomenon! It was a series that drew an unprecedented amount of attention. We were the most watched series that year on broadcast or cable. Let that sink in for a minute. That kind of success is very humbling because you are really part of something so much bigger than yourself. I can remember the streets being blocked off in front of the cast house in Seaside, with a thousand people outside just chanting the cast names, like they were BTS or Taylor Swift. It was absolutely surreal. Eventually, I went on to Executive Produce and Showrun. I am fortunate enough to have run big shows from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, to Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, MTV’s True Life, and the Netflix original series Dancing Queen. I think the through line for me in all of my projects is a focus on outrageous characters and story. I am drawn to big, loud, bold, and slightly off kilter real characters who have no filter and give zero f*cks. 

 
 
What are you working on right now? Anything cool?
 
I’m currently on location right now working on a really interesting new project for a major cable network. I can’t say too much at the moment but I will say we’re producing this show in an entirely new way, partly because of Covid, and partly because the story just demands to be told this way. Stay tuned for more details! 

I’ve also been focused on developing a slate of original unscripted formats to sell to buyers. I have deals in place with a few very large International production companies specializing in producing formats. We’re out pitching currently and making good progress on that front. After all these years of producing other people’s concepts, it’s wildly refreshing to be working on bringing my own creative to life. 
 
 
What’s your favorite TV show of 2021?
 
My favorite scripted show is Search Party. I am in absolute awe of that series. It’s the perfect scripted show. Hands down. Full stop. 

On the unscripted front, I have a deep and everlasting love of game shows and the reboot of Match Game just makes me completely happy. That show gives me every single thing I want from an hour of unscripted television. I’m also a huge Survivor fan, but of course, all of the fans of that show are having major withdrawals now as they had to take a pause due to the pandemic. 
 
 
This or that -> Netflix or Disney+?
 
Neither! I’m a Hulu and Amazon Prime kind of guy. I also still appreciate what NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX bring to the table. Don’t count the broadcasters out just yet!
 
 
What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
Network, network, network. Have your 60 second pitch of yourself ready to drop at a moment’s notice. The pandemic has made networking in person impossible, which means it’s more important than ever, to stay connected with your extended network in any way you can. I love getting those check-in emails from people I’ve worked with in the past. Those emails don’t always immediately lead to a job offer, but it gets them back on my radar for the next hiring round. 
 
 
What’s one insider tip to success you’d give for others in 2021?
 
Don’t wait for other people to give you permission to succeed.

Wandavision, but Star Wars The Bad Batch premiers May 4th so it is about to be overshadowed.
 
 
What’s one thing you do often that inspires you to continue to create?
 
Inspiration comes to me in many different ways. I consumer other creatives’ work on a daily basis whether that’d be music videos, visualizers, recaps, movies and etc. which often links me to tie their visual components to an artist’s demo. More often than not, I plug my headphones in, go for a walk and let my mind run free with imagination. This could result in a simple idea for a shot or a complex storyline music video. Sometimes inspiration just hits you out of nowhere. But those two really help me get the creative juices flowing.

What advice do you have for others looking to break into the industry?
 
My biggest tip? Don’t diversify too much. The biggest mistake I have seen in my over 10 years in this industry is stretching yourself out too much. You should think to yourself, what are the two or three social media platforms that you can maximize and focus all of your time on? ‘Would you like to be really good at a few things or sort of good at a lot of things,’ is what I ask myself

Everyone has a passion, and if you share that passion others will find you. Not everyone will make it big but you miss 100% of shots you don’t make.

Are there any skills that should not be included?
 Some casting directors believe that your skills have the potential to show your personality. If these skills can be translated onto screen somehow, put them on your resume! These funky skills could include unicycle riding, being able to recite the alphabet backwards, or being the fastest person in the world to solve a rubik's cube. But don’t be ridiculous. Skills like reading, babysitting, or eating tacos waste valuable space on your profile.

Should I learn a new skill for a role?
 The answer is 'yes'! Learning new skills will not only help you land the role you want, but can also play an essential role in your overall career. If a character knows how to play the guitar, it helps if you know how to play as well. Learning skills also helps you steer your own career. For instance - if you want to be on Broadway, learn different types of dance. Acting is a craft that you can continuously improve on.

Can I lie about a skill, even if I’m currently learning it?
 Never lie about a skill you have. Be upfront and honest. If you are learning how to play the piano, you can say that you are learning. It’s very possible that a casting director will move you on to the next phase of casting because you have a certain attribute listed on your profile. It’d be incredibly awkward if you listed something that was dishonest - especially if you make it to the following interview stage in the casting process. Faking a skill not only wastes the casting director’s time, but also yours.

Four Questions About Special Skills, Answered

Most people are aware that they'll need to prepare for an audition but are not really sure what this means. I've seen thousands of auditions, hosted hundreds of casting calls and have spoken to - who knows how many - on-camera talent from all walks of life. Here are a few mistakes I see happen often that are easily avoidable.

1.Know what you're auditioning for.
 I know this may sound a bit silly - but hear me out. You'd be suprised how often casting directors come across auditions in which the talent doesn't know what show they're auditioning for. This can be for a handful of reasons - such as talent getting auditions mixed up (because their audition calendar is full and unorganized) or they're simply not prepared. In sum, preparation is key to nailing your audition. How do you prepare? Here are some pointers:
<ul class="indent-list">1. Be on time.
 2. Practice your lines (if it's a scripted audition).
 3. Dress for the part.
 4. Research the production company and know what they generally cast for.
5. Remember to smile when your audition starts.

2. Be descriptive with you responses.
 If you're auditioning for an unscripted show - such as a gameshow, talkshow or dating show - you'll be asked a ton of fun personality questions during your interview. The casting director will most likely ask you to answer all of your responses in complete sentences. For instance, if they ask you what your favorite color is, you should respond with "my favorite color is...". Because their voice will most likely be cut out of the interview, answering the question in full sentences will give the person who watches the video, context.

3. Be in a quiet space. 
 The talent that does video auditions in quiet spaces are unsung heros. This is your big interview, so treat it like one! Here are some tips:
<ul class="indent-list">1. Quiet spaces are not cars or communal offices. 
 2. Put your dogs in a separate room, and turn your phone on DNB.
 3. If you won't be in a quiet space during the time of your interview, ask the poster if you can reschedule. They'll appreciate that you were proactive!

4. Look like your photos.
