We built <b>roles questionnaires</b> to help creators create efficiency within the application process leading to find the right talent for their projects. The goal of this section within your production form is to eliminate the need for Google Forms and Airtable so that you can manage the entire casting process in one space. 

Because the casting process can be lengthy, with different questionnaires needed for different parts of it, we built the questionnaire section to add three very important parts to the casting process - <b><u>The Application Phase</u>, <u>The Audition Phase</u>, and <u>The Post-Casting Phase.</u> </b>

Role Questionnaires

You have a great idea and you’re ready to pursue it. Now what? 

Many aspiring creatives are in a financially tight position and have questions about what steps to take to make their project come to life. If you don’t have millions of dollars laying around to fund your project, where does that leave you? In limbo, yes, until you can find someone else who believes in your project as much as you do. 

Here are a few tips we have for our fellow creators who could use some guidance in building the next big box-office hit:

<ul class="indent-list">
	<li><b>Friends and family round.</b>
There may not be an individual friend who has the cash to fund an entire film project on their own, but cash collectively from a handful of friends could be enough to fund everything. Once you have your pitch perfected and a sample deck to show, begin to ask around for financing. You’d be surprised by the amount of people who will feed off of your passion and invest. 

<b>Crowdfund.</b>
A lot of indie producers use crowdfunding platforms to create their projects. The trick to becoming successful on sites like these is being as descriptive as possible with your project. You’ll need to show that it’s much more than a ‘big idea’. Before pursuing this process, be constructive of your work. Ask yourself questions like - What makes it different? What does someone receive from investing in the film? 

<b>Partner with a production company.</b>
If it’s your first project, it’s OK to not take on the entire production by yourself. Take it as a learning opportunity and hand it off to a production company that can make it come to life. Because, at the end of the day, the goal should be to bring your work to the big screen. This way when you go to make your second film project, you’ll know the ropes AND have the funds. It’s a win-win. Production companies are always looking for creative individuals to partner with. While there is not a definitive list of who those production companies are, all it takes is a simple online search. Shop around, see what companies match your vision, and pitch until someone says ‘yes’.

<b>Hire friends and give them equity.</b>
You may have friends that are looking for experience and credits to add to their resume. It could be advantageous to use your project as a growth opportunity for your friends who are also aspiring creatives. Be open minded to collaborating with others who want the chance to flex their skills for the first time. You could still create an incredible project, but for a fraction of the cost.

Rejection can be hard. We know. However raising funds for a project is a great learning experience. It’ll help you learn how to pitch effectively, where to pitch and how to deal with someone saying, ‘no’. 


How to Find Funding for Film Projects

SAG-AFTRA, or The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, is a union that supports film and television actors, radio personalities, voice actors, journalists, recording artists, singers, and other media professionals. 

Once you become eligible to join, you may apply to be part of the union. In order to join, an initiation fee of $3,000 is charged. Along with that, you are charged semi annual dues. Once you become a member, the union is meant to serve you, the actor. Their responsibility is to assist with your retirement fund, negotiate an appropriate salary, and ensure that you have health benefits. 

<b> So, when is the right time to join SAG-AFTRA? </b>
<ul class="indent-list">
	<li>
When you become part of the union, you can no longer work for non-union authorized productions. As a result, you will be competing in a job market against other highly skilled actors. 

Before you decide to join, it is important to reassess your acting abilities and your marketability.  Make sure that your acting skills are high enough to get casted over other talented actors. If needed, hone in on your craft some more before applying. In addition to this, make sure there is an opening for you in the acting world. What do you offer to it? Do you have a specific brand, and is there room for you in the union job market where you live? Once you decide that you are a perfect fit, make sure that you have the appropriate marketing tools for yourself.

Everyone has a different opinion about joining SAG-AFTRA:

“My opinion on when to join SAG-AFTRA is unpopular, but I stand by it, as I've coached many actors over the years. If your dream is to be a working SAG actor on network and studio projects, and you have a few non-union projects on your resume, then you should join the union as soon as you have the opportunity.” - <i> The Hollywood Success Coach </i>

“If an actor doesn’t have an agent and is looking for work on their own, than the chances are they will only be able to get themselves auditions for non union work. If an actor/actress has a SAG agent and is being sent out on auditions for SAG productions then they should join SAG. When Should I Join SAG-AFTRA?

There are a handful of ways a casting director may ask you to audition for their project. In some cases - especially for TV/film projects - talent could be invited to self-tape. This means that you will be submitting your audition via video. It’s a great opportunity for a first impression.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>How do I set up my self-tape? 🚀</h3></b>
Use the below tips as general guidelines to successfully completing your submission. If you ever have any questions, reach out to the poster before you submit. On Casting Depot, you'll be invited to self-submit, where you'll be directed to an upload page. It'll ask you to upload your MP3 or MP4 with specific instructions alongside it. Remember to check the guidelines noted by the poster as they may be different from our suggestions below.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>What camera should I use? 🎥</h3></b>
Ideally, you should use a computer (or even a tablet) to record yourself. Unless noted otherwise by the job poster, a phone should be fine as well. Either way, turn off/exit out of all of the applications running routinely in the background. The casting director doesn't want to hear a text notification in the middle of your video.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>What about camera positioning?🧐</h3></b>
The camera should be at eye level (or slightly higher) with you. You should not be looking down at the camera. That's never a good angle. Having the phone in landscape mode is generally prefered. Once you begin filming, be positioned in the center of the frame. Use a tight shot, making sure your torso and head are in frame otherwise you'll look like a floating head!

<h3 class="text-left"><b>What about lighting?💡</h3></b>
Make sure your computer/camera is between you and the light source. If you have a light source behind you - such as a window or lamp - you’ll appear as a silhouette.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>Location, location, location. 🏠</h3></b>
It’s important that you’re able to speak freely during your self-tape and that you’re in a space that you can do so. Presentable backgrounds include an office, living room or kitchen. Casting directors will generally ask that when you record, you are not in a car or in a public space.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>What do I wear? 👕 </h3></b>
It’s always a good idea to dress to impress – with whatever style is true to you! Unless noted otherwise by the self-tape instructions, be hair and makeup ready. If this is for a scripted series or theatrical production, wear an outfit close to what your character would wear. Insider tip - Gem tones look best on camera.

	<h3 class="text-left"><b>Who sees the self-tape? 👀 </h3></b>
Self-tapes are generally for internal use, only. Meaning that any management or affiliated partners on the project will see and use the tape for consideration. If the tape is used for outside purposes, the job poster will generally note that in their request for the self-tape. It's common that, if this is the case, they'll ask you to sign an image release form before being cast.

<h3 class="text-left"><b>How do I stand out on a self-tape? 🗣</h3></b>
Energy is the magic answer to standing out. How? Project your voice, enunciate your words and be expressive with facial reactions. Be passionate about the role you're applying for. Unless your character mandate calls for otherwise, set your presence through your voice and choice of words. A casting director, no matter what type of production, will always appreciate the enthusiasm you show during your self-tape.

Some creators have the sign-off to share all of the production details, while others only have the job description. So, we built three different types of questionnaires to support the modern creator.

If you have permission to share at least 75% of the production details, this questionnaire is most likely for you. Have full control over the artwork, the production description, compensation and title tags.

<br><b> 🚀 Rush </b></br>
The major difference between <b>Rush</b> and <b>Standard</b> is that Rush gets pinned to the top of a user feed for a set period of days. If you need to fill a role ASAP, this is the quickest way to ensure applicant eyeballs right away.

<br><b> 🤫 Confidential </b></br>
If you want to keep your information underwraps, the posting a confidential production is most likely suited for you. We'll display our standard confidential artwork and keep other key details of the posting private to ensure confidentiality.

If you have a taste for all things scary, you’ve probably seen your fair share of horror films. And for a good reason - horror movies can send a chill down your spine, take you off on a twisted journey, or simply provide some fun thrills on a Friday night. But for actors, a role in a horror film can sometimes feel like a more limited display of your performative skills. Here’s why you shouldn’t overlook what scary flicks have to offer:

<b> Horror Films Can Be Career Launchers </b> You might be surprised to learn how many actors got their start in horror movies. Jennifer Aniston entered the scene with a role in Leprechaun, a very young Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Critters 3, and teenage Johnny Depp had a supporting part in A Nightmare on Elm Street. For these stars, scary films offered early opportunities to showcase their talents for later roles. Elm Street in particular ended up being a huge critical and commercial success.

<b> The Horror Genre is No Longer Just “Disposable” Entertainment </b> Let’s be honest - for years, scary films were looked down upon by film snobs. Franchises like Scream and Friday the 13th have avid fans and lots of box office success, but they rarely earned critical acclaim or Rotten Tomatoes approval. In just the last several years, the landscape has completely changed. Jordan Peele’s brillant socio-political horror film Get Out won “Best Screenplay” at the 2018 Oscars. This past winter, horror-thriller Parasite won “Best Picture.” The horror genre has become a fantastic medium for exploring complex political and moral issues. Which leads us to our next point:

There’s a ton of work that goes on behind the scenes to make the “magic” happen. On every set, there’s a production assistant that aids in bringing that big idea to camera. A production assistant, or PA, is an entry level job for those wishing to work in the film and television industry. PAs assist with a variety of jobs from executing administrative work, running errands to helping prepare the set. 

<b> Qualities of a great PA </b>

Since PAs' obligations vary in tasks, it’s hard to specify what makes someone “great”. It's likewise an entry level position, so you aren't required to have any significant experience. In any case, there are a couple of key qualities that every PA requires in order to perform well:

Upon completion, “Made in NY” offers two years of  job placement assistance and career counseling.

<b>“PA Boot Camp” (Los Angeles)</b>
“PA Book Camp,” founded by Leigh Paonessa and Chuck Canzoneri, takes place during one weekend from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M.  on both the Saturday and the Sunday. There, students participate in rigorous training sessions lead by Drill Instructors Paonessa and Canzoneri, and Director Jody Brockway. These sessions are meant to prepare people to join the Film and Television industry immediately upon completion. The program costs $240, but charges $200 with a valid student I.D.

If an actor is aptly willing to listen and work well with their co-stars, directors, producers, and so on, the project has even more potential of being a hit.&nbsp;</span></p>

3 Tips for Actors on Set For the First Time

Not everyone is a Kardashian or a Ramsey, nor does anyone need to be. The beautiful aspect to auditioning for unscripted shows is that you get to decide how you want your personality to shine. There&rsquo;s no one like you, and it&rsquo;s important to remember that. But how do you stand out in a sea of people? Let our tips below aid you in your interviewing process to becoming the next reality TV star.

**1. Be prepared for your video interview.**

If you&rsquo;re interviewing with a casting director on a video call, remember that this is your big audition. If you made it to this phase, you were most likely chosen out of a sea full of applicants. Like any job interview, it&rsquo;s important to be prepared so that you don&rsquo;t waste both yours and the interviewers time. The three preparation steps are easy: 1) connect to good WiFi, 2) be in a quiet space such as an office or your kitchen (cars are generally unacceptable) and 3) look your best. Simple, right?

**2. Speak in full sentences.**

Your casting tape will most likely be cut into a short sizzle for internal use by the production company if they decide to move forward with you. It&rsquo;ll be helpful to the casting director that you speak in full, complete sentences. For instance, if they ask you what your favorite color is, your response should be something along the lines of, &ldquo;my favorite color is blue&rdquo;.&nbsp;

Additionally, while it may be difficult to do, remember to avoid &lsquo;ums&rsquo; and &lsquo;likes&rsquo; as much as possible. Using those two filler words often makes your stories and sentences drawn out which deters from your messaging. Be clear, descriptive and project your voice.

**3. Wear clothing with colors that make you pop off the screen.**

Clothing colors such as black, white and grey often blend you into the background on video. Additionally, know that you&rsquo;re most likely in a sea of applicants that also wear neutral colors. Use this as an opportunity to stand out in your interview and wear bright colors such as red and light blue. </span><b><i>Insider tip: avoid flashy shirts with large logos.</i></b></p>

**4. Remember your story.**

People often ask, &ldquo;how do I make myself stand out to a Casting Director?&rdquo; While there&rsquo;s not a simple checklist to follow, it is important to remember what makes you different. What tid-bits of information can you share in your interview that make you different from others? Avoiding generic comments such as &ldquo;I like to travel&rdquo; or &ldquo;I love spending time with my friends&rdquo; will get you a long way. Think of unique experiences or qualities about yourself that are </span><b>specific</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to you such as &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been to every country&rdquo; or &ldquo;I eat hot sauce with every meal&rdquo;. You get the point.

Casting Directors have limited time alloted to your interview. It can be incredibly frustrating for them when the talent they&rsquo;re interviewing is not prepared in advance. While we can&rsquo;t guarantee that it&rsquo;ll land you the gig, following these tips will absolutely give you an upper hand amongst other applicants.

Your headshot is your ‘elevator pitch’ to the industry. You only have a brief moment of time to capture the attention of a Casting Director, Agent or Talent Manager. But with so many different headshots out there, how can you stand out from the crowd? Have you considered what makes a GREAT headshot? How about an AWFUL one? Having the perfect headshot will be the difference of you being considered for a project, and not. It’s a genuine insight into your personality, professionalism and excitement for being considered for a project.

Moving on. It’s important to realize that a headshot is not just an image but the literal representation of you and ultimately your brand. So, who are you? Headshots help market you as an actor to agents, managers, and casting directors. It’ll help you make a great first impression.

<b>What makes a headshot good?</b>
<br>The photos should look like you. This means natural looking makeup rather than glamour shots… and no filters. If you change your look, change your headshots. Casting directors use your photo to determine if you are a right fit for their role. For example, if you are auditioning for a grandmother role and you look extremely young in your headshot, the casting director will determine that you are not the  right for that particular role.

For your attire, wear something that compliments your skin tone. Avoid neutral colors, since everyone wears neutral. Bright colors are always encouraged.

<b>What are the logistics of a headshot session?</b>
<br>Find a great photographer. Ask for recommendations and check out their work. If you are going to be paying between $400 and $1,500, for a one hour to a four hour session, you hire someone with work you like. While at the session, bring at least two different looks to diversify your portfolio.

A big hesitation to purchasing professional headshots is often the cost associated with them. If you’re on a budget, have a friend take photos. Treat it like a shoot - find unique backdrops and bring a change of clothes. 

<b>What happens after the session?</b>
<br>With all the roles you will be auditioning for (scripted and theater), order between 20 and 100 hardcopy headshots. These headshots should be in color, vertical, and 8 x 10 inches. Your name should be listed on the top with your resume on the back.

<b>Improvisation:</b> Much of being a good host is improvisation. Because hosted shows are typically unscripted, the ability to think and talk on the fly is a crucial skill for prospective hosts. In an audition, a casting director will most likely test your ability to go “off-script” and make the prompts your own. 

<b>Conversational Skills:</b> The best way to prepare to be a host is simply to talk with others. Conversational abilities - such as bantering - are your greatest asset. Show off your natural charm and charisma throughout the process, and you’ll be in great shape.

<b>How Do I Audition?</b>
Auditioning as a host is different than auditioning for acting gigs. There is much less of a set structure for getting the job. Often, the potential host will undergo on-camera interviews, then go through a “run-through” This usually consists of putting a host in a mock scenario with guest talent to talk about general topics together. 

When you begin to apply to hosting gigs, don’t forget to include a host reel. A well executed reel highlights expertise, speech and style. Think of it as your “promo tape” that’s about a minute and a half long. While demo reels are meant to be one's audition (sans script), reels aren't just for actors - they're for anyone looking to be on camera.
