In a surprise casting, Kristen Stewart was cast in the role of Princess Diana, as announced on Deadline.

The film “Spencer”, written by Steven Knight, centers on the late Princess’s split from Prince Charles. It'll follow the course of a Christmas weekend in which Diana realized her marriage couldn’t be saved whilst on a retreat to the House of Windsor's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England.

Diana and Charles married in 1981 and split in 1992, with their divorce finalizing in 1996. She tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Director Pablo Larraín told Deadline, “We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen.” He explains their choice in casting Kristen came down to her being “one of the great actors around today."

He further adds, “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need."

Production of the film is expected to begin in early 2021.
