Hairspray Star Nikki Blonsky Gives Us Industry Advice
Nikki Blonsky is an actress, singer and best known for her role in the 2007 film Hairspray as Tracy Turnblad. She sat down with Casting Depot to chat about lessons learned during her journey to success in the industry.
What’s your full name and occupation?
Nikki Blonsky/ Actress and entertainer.
Tell us about you and your career.
My career started 14 years ago when I first auditioned for the movie musical, Hairspray. Prior to that, my only performing experience was in my high school shows. Singing was my main passion growing up and when I discovered theater in high school, I knew I found where I was meant to be.
Tell us about your credits.
My credits include 'Hairspray' which was released in 2007. 'Queensized', a Lifetime original, was filmed shortly after Hairspray, which was followed by the ABC Family (now Freeform) original, Huge. I've been blessed to have been a part of incredible shows like 'Ugly Betty' and 'Smash'. Working on Films such as 'The English Teacher' and 'Geography Club' were exceptional experiences. For me, one of the most eye-opening, favorite experiences was when I worked alongside the late, Burt Reynolds on the film 'The Last Movie Star'. He made a massive impression on me and my work.
Did you have to make difficult choices and what are the lessons learned?
I have had to make difficult decisions such as turning down roles early on in my career, that didn't morally align with me when I was younger, and now that I'm older I've learned to be more comfortable and not be afraid of the risks that come with playing certain roles because I've also learned in life that the risk is truly worth the reward.
What advice do you have for people looking to break into the industry?
My advice for someone breaking into the entertainment business is that no matter how many times you get knocked down in this business or in life, you must keep going and trying at all costs. If you have a passion to act or perform, run with that passion. You never know unless you try and remember when there is one rejection from a role, there will be another role that is right for you. Just keep auditioning for everything!
What are your favorite shows/film?
My favorite movies are 'Mary Poppins' with Julie Andrews; she has always been an idol of mine. My favorite movie from high school was '10 things I hate about you', and it's still my top favorite movies. My favorite TV show growing up has always been 'Will and Grace', it has always meant so much to me and working with Debra Messing on Smash was surreal! Right now, I'm currently watching 'Bly Manor' and 'Ratchet' on Netflix, and I'm absolutely in love with both of these shows.
What’s is been like working during COVID19?
Working during Covid has been a tough experience for everyone. For me, I have missed set and missed the camaraderie of building a project together and I look forward to that again. I started my own podcast called Nikki Nights and that has kept me in touch with a lot of my friends in the entertainment business and some new people. I've learned a ton from hosting this show and interviewing them. It's been a wonderful experience!
